Making the Old New

Marrakech is a chaotic city that uses a multitude of resources to construct its
environment. The aesthetic of this project combines traditional construction with the
city’s inherent makeshift chaos. There is a high level of illiteracy and a lack of trade
skills so this project proposes a construction school that welcomes people of all ages
and abilities to offer new life to the economy. The design of both the structural
elements and the façade finishes will represent the scale of the people involved in
the project, allowing the human form to fuse with the site. The design programme
utilises the I Ching method of random selection to remove elements of taste and
aesthetic, and to develop a scheme based on chance. The building programme
makes use of the random consequences of an earthquake.
