The Great Lantern of Marrakech: A New Minaret for the City


The proposal seeks to re-define the minaret with the introduction of new uses.
The ground floor is made up of densely packed inhabitable columns that house a
myriad of micro shops and activities. Above the hubbub is the quiet of the main
contemplation space that stretches to the lofty apex of the minarets crown. This
crown, a complex network of corbelled perforated brick, lights up like a lantern
over the city as the sun passes through the walls at its setting and is illuminated
from within at night time.
These images can be viewed as works in their own right but have also informed
