At the heart of the historic medina quarter of Marrakech an abandoned Club Med complex
is reclaimed by the people and is transformed into a vibrant hub of social and commercial
activity. All floors above ground level are converted into residential units, built by those who
will inhabit them. The ground floor itself is left clear for the local community to use for
souks and performance space.
Every design decision during the construction process is subject to an element of chance.
With a catalogue of materials and techniques the builder throws I Ching coins to determine
layout and element allocation. Materiality is key to this project and every surface is carefully
considered for both practicality and experiential quality.
